The Fishing Gear Numbers

Fishing tackle is covered in numbers that don't mean what they look like they mean: a rod's power and action are two separate specs, a reel's gear ratio isn't the same as its retrieve speed, line test ratings aren't comparable across mono, fluoro, and braid, and hook sizes run in two opposite directions. This page is the normalized decoder table for all of it — a reference dataset, not a buying guide. Every row cites its source; pair it with the specific product's own spec sheet before you buy.

The one thing to know: Rod power describes stiffness (what lure/line weight loads the blank), and rod action describes where it bends — they are two independent specs, not one sliding scale, and most anglers only ever check one of them.

Gear ratio is turns-per-crank, not retrieve speed by itself — A reel's gear ratio (e.g. 6.2:1) is turns-per-crank, not speed by itself — actual retrieve speed (inches per turn, IPT) also depends on spool diameter, so two 7.0:1 reels from different lines can retrieve different amounts of line per crank. Always check the manufacturer's published IPT figure alongside the ratio when comparing reels.

Hook sizes run backwards on purpose: the numbered scale (#32 to #1) gets SMALLER as the number goes up, then the scale flips at the 1/0 'aught' boundary and gets LARGER as the number goes up (1/0 to 20/0+) — #1 and 1/0 are next to each other, not far apart. Frequently Asked Questions

A normalized reference dataset covering the recurring spec systems anglers have to decode when buying rods, reels, line, and terminal tackle: rod power and action, line types and their true test-to-diameter reality, reel gear ratio and IPT, reel sizing, drag ratings, hook numbering, and split-shot sizing. It exists because most retail copy repeats these terms without explaining what they mean.

No — they are two independent specs. Power describes how much force it takes to bend the rod (what lure/line weight it's rated for); action describes WHERE along the blank it bends (tip only vs deep into the blank). A 'medium-fast' rod is medium power with a fast action — you need both words to know what you're buying.

There are actually two scales stitched together. The numbered scale (#32 to #1) gets smaller as the number increases; then at the boundary it switches to the 'aught' scale (1/0 to 20/0+), which gets larger as the number increases. #1 and 1/0 sit right next to each other in real hook size — the confusion is that the direction of the numbers flips exactly at that point.

Not necessarily. Gear ratio is turns-per-crank, but actual retrieve speed (inches per turn) also depends on the spool's diameter. A 7.0:1 reel with a larger spool can out-retrieve a 7.3:1 reel with a smaller spool. Check the manufacturer's published IPT figure, not just the ratio, when comparing across reel lines.

Not reliably. Braid's tensile strength per diameter is higher than monofilament's, so a 20 lb braid is often much thinner than 20 lb mono, and its true strength-to-diameter relationship differs from mono's. Compare line types by diameter and manufacturer spec sheet, not by test number alone.
