Rod power vs. rod action

Power and action are two independent specs, not one sliding scale. Power (ultralight through extra-heavy) describes how much force it takes to load the blank — effectively, the lure and line weight it's rated for. Action describes WHERE along the blank it bends: slow rods flex deep into the butt, fast rods flex mainly in the tip. Mono, fluorocarbon, and braid, honestly

Monofilament stretches the most (~15–25%), is the easiest to knot, and its printed test rating is closest to true breaking strength. Fluorocarbon is nearly invisible underwater and has the best abrasion resistance, but is stiffer and needs more knot wraps. Braid has near-zero stretch for direct hooksets and the smallest diameter per pound of test — which is exactly why braid's "test" number is not directly comparable to mono or fluoro's. Gear ratio isn't retrieve speed by itself

A reel's gear ratio (e.g. 6.2:1) counts spool rotations per handle turn — it is not the same thing as retrieve speed. Actual inches-per-turn (IPT) also depends on spool diameter, so a 7.0:1 reel with a larger spool can out-retrieve a 7.3:1 reel with a smaller one. Reel sizing and drag

Spinning reel sizes (1000 through 5000+) broadly track line capacity and target species class — 1000–2000 for panfish and light finesse work, 2500–3000 for general bass and walleye, 4000 and up for bigger fish and heavier line. A reel's printed max drag is a lab-condition ceiling; the conventional usable fishing drag setting is roughly 25–33% of your line's test, leaving margin for knots and sudden surges. Why hook sizes run backwards

Hook sizing is two scales stitched together. The numbered scale (#32 down to #1) gets SMALLER as the number increases; at the boundary it flips to the "aught" scale (1/0 up to 20/0+), which gets LARGER as the number increases. #1 and 1/0 sit right next to each other in actual hook size — the confusion is purely that the counting direction flips at that point. Picking a first rod-and-reel combo

A first combo should match power/action to a general-purpose target (panfish-to-bass usually means medium power, fast action, 6'6"–7'), favor a durable blank over a sensitive one while you're still learning, and pair with line matched to the rod's rated test range rather than the heaviest line that fits the spool.
